Why do towing eyes have a anticlockwise thread?

Well they screw in anticlockwise on any Ford I've towed.

Had me wondering after towing yet another car off the verge by the side of our drive. Our drive is a convenient place to turn and lots of people use it a surprising number miss it all together and get stuck in mud on the verge.

Edit> OK so google had the answer - so a laid (twisted) rope doesn't unwind it as tension is put on it - thought there must be a simple answer. I have a chain ready for towing.

Wake me up when it's all over.
