Just wondering if three are any good home grown sites or if ppl just use amazon.de to avoid the hefty P&P charges.

Amazon Germany have higher postage charges than the .co.uk site.
Why would you order from there?

Because you're not charged VAT twice on the .de store.

Standard books are zero rated for Vat and amazon UK have entered an arrangement to collect any vat and customs due at time of purchase... stay under 150 a transaction and you are fine. (If you are buying items which attract VAT, they take off the UK vat before adding Irish vat at checkout so you are not charged twice.)

I use the bookdepository.com sometimes. Not home grown, not super fast, but free postage and ok pricing.

I've used bookstation.ie previously and would recommend them.

Have you heard of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library?

They post free books to children monthly, you could see if your area is covered.

1.You aren't charged VAT twice in the UK store.
    2.Books are 0% VAT anyway.
3.The OP clearly only mentions postage and packing.

Actually alot of the books are read once type ones. Half thinking of getting a kindle or ereader device. Not sure which is better though
