Cancelled/rescheduled flight - how long to request refund

I am due to fly to Mexico in July. I logged into the airlines website today to see what the options are if I want to reschedule.

It turns out that the flight was cancelled and rescheduled to another flight without notifying us.

It seems we now have the option to cancel the flight all together or reschedule. Since it might not be possible to travel late this summer, is it possible to leave the rescheduled flight as it is and only request the refund in a few months time, if its still not possible to fly?

    Hmm

Yup, I did this we Aer Lingus last year, they changed my flights a day later. Until they notify you you know nothing. I held off till the last minute, cancelled. Rebooked at a fraction of the price for the day earlier.

So even if you travel it might be cheaper to cancel and book the same flights again...

    Thanks for that.

Unfortunately cancelling and booking is a no go, I only paid €300 each for flights that usually go for over €1000. Which is why I really don't want to cancel.

In that case you hold on and can call up and get them to change the flights so if you booked for Wednesday and they moved to Thursday it is completely reasonable to request rebooking to Tuesday. There should be no charge for this for the first flight before/after your booked date

But asking to change several weeks they can change fare difference

From googling this it seeks to depends on the terms and conditions of the particular airline.
It is an interesting question - how long you have to decide whether to take refund or alternative flight when offer is made by airline. Let us know the outcome!
I’ve done both refund and reschedule last year but made the decision in a couple of days.
It’s a shame customer service is typically appealing and it’s not straightforward to just ask.
