Securing timber to external wall of timber frame house

    Hi all

I’ll be building a lean to shed out to the side of my house over the next few weeks. I’ll be fixing the rafters to a horizontal timber beam on the side of the house.

The house is a new build (2019), timber frame with a render finish. What type of wall plugs would be best to secure it to the side of the house / what length of screws should I use??

    Thanks

Is outer leaf concrete block and plastered and inner leaf timber frame ?
If so I suggest a masonry bolt along these lines:
    https://www.screwfix.ie/p/easyfix-bright-zinc-plated-carbon-steel-concrete-bolts-m10-x-100mm-10-pack/5800p
Beauty of these is that you just drill hole and secure with ratchet and socket. Can drill a larger hole to facilitate the bolt head if you wish.
You will need to go into the block at least 50mm plus say 10mm render so add this to thickness of your ledger / horizontal timber for a min bolt length.
Depending on size of your new structure M8 or M10 should be plenty. What centres are your rafters ? If say 600mm ctrs you could fix the ledger every 600mm also, equal distance between the rafters or indeed behind the rafter if you wanted to hide the bolts. Are you planning to use joist hangers to secure rafters to ledger or ?

You can fix the timber with compression anchors also known as express nails. Just drill an 8mm hole & hammer in. They come in different lengths. The timber will not move believe me! You can also use concrete screws again drill the hole, no rawlplug needed & screw the bolt in. Again, this is a really solid fixing. Use a 4 or 6 by 2 timber plate & anchors approx length 160mm
