Turning a farm Gate into a garden Gate.

Hi, I have an opening at the side of my house in an estate. My driveway is at the side and from a security point of view its easy access to my car from anyone who walks past.

The width of the driveway opening is 15 feet. Consisting of a 5ft wall to 8ft fence. I will top the wall up with a wall topper to match the fence. That leaves me with the opening in Which I wanted to have a folding gate of some sort.

If i got a 15ft farm gate could I add wood to reface the gate. As well as cutting the gate so it can fold on to itself. Therefore I can have the driveway open during the day, without the gate opening on to the footpath.

So the gist of the project is weld supports on to gate to hold wood (7ft lents?) Cut gate and weld hinges onto it so it can fold. Is this practical? I am going to try the welding myself and do this as a hobby project.

Don’t know if the timber is possible to do, I presume it is. We’d a 15 ft opening too, and bought 2 8ft gates and mounted them to one side of the piers so they open one way and not the other, but saved the hassle and awkwardness of a 15ft gate which is quite impractical.

    sliding gate?

Sliding gate not an option unfortunately. I put decking flush inside the fence awhile back so I would have to move that to get space for it to slide across.

Are you are suggesting splitting the gate in two ? How will they fold, new hinges or ?
I would be concerned of the weight of the timber on a standard field gate.
Would you consider getting a steel frame made up and hinged to your spec and fit the timbers yourself maybe ?

Move some of the decking, sliding gate is most practical option for that distance

Ya splitting 1 side of the gate in two. Lets say one gate is 8ft. Cut in half make two square gates from it. Add hinges to join them together. Add a bolt/lever to the bottom/center to support the center weight, another bolt at the end that will also go into the ground. Gate will be attached on to a concrete post. The depth of car space is 15 feet also, hence why I want to make the gate fold.

Most cars in the country are accessible, is the car the only reason you want a gate ?

A farm gate won’t have the steel in it to hinge like that and the weight of being planked. It will likely fail and injure someone.
Best thing is get professional welder to do the job. It will be far better and probably cheaper than you could do yourself.

I usually travel with family for the summer, so I would be gone for 6/7 weeks. The wall I will raise at the other side is a prime spot for teenagers or kids to climb and mess about. By closing it up I will eliminate both problem's.
