    Alright lads,

Planning on buying a car in the next few months and keep coming back to the 430D in M Sport form, probably 2015-16. Anyone have/had one? Any major problems with them?

    Cheers.

I have a 2016 one, only have it 6 months and have had no problems.
Having said that I know the previous owner and he had no problems either.

Make sure it has been serviced regularly and check the egr recall has been done.
The 6 cylinder engine doesn’t suffer the timing chain issues like the 4 cylinder ones, ZF 8 speed box is a gem.

See if you can find a car with heads up display and adaptive lights, two really nice options on a car.
Nice comfortable car with plenty of power when needed.
There’s a factory approved performance kit available for them, makes a big difference to the car. M Performance power kit.

Cheers, great to hear. Yeah, adaptive lights and the pro nav screen are a must for me. Seen a few nice examples up north. I know all about the timing chain having had an N47 before! Hard to find one with sub 100k miles though. But I guess if serviced regularly with full history it'll be fine.

Not wanting to be a negative nelly but unfortunately it does suffer the timing chain issue. You just don't hear about it as much because 90% of cars are the 20d model. Check motor confidence site on Facebook and you'll see a lot of cars he's repaired are those 6 cylinders.

I think a regular oil service is a must on these cars. Bmw intervals are just too long, every 2 yrs or 30k km is madness.

Wallin is absolutely right, the N57 most certainly can suffer from the timing chain problem as well (it is pretty much an N47 but with two extra cylinders stuck on and some other relatively minor modifications after all).

What is different is that the N57 is less prone to the problem because they almost always come in automatic guise (I believe because the chain is right next to the DMF in a manual is the reason why the manuals are more prone to this problem than the automatics), and the oil capacity is over 8 litres so the stupidly long oil change intervals are less of an issue than they are in the N47 cars (which typically have a 5.2 litre oil capacity). Also a 3.0 is more likely to have been owned by an enthusiast so will have ensured it was serviced on time and with the correct oil.

I've driven a 430d Gran Coupé and the engine and 8 speed ZF are phenomenal by diesel standards, you won't be disappointed.

    I've a 435d for 3 years ('17) 0 probs.
    fast and economical :-)
if getting xdrive, try and get adaptive suspension.
ZF (manufacturer) recommend getting the transmission oil changed every 80K

    True.

I should have worded my reply better and said less prone compared to the 4 cylinder, I’m familiar with motor confidence alright, he says they usually need replacement at about 200k kms.

I've a 2017 facelifted Gran Coupe for about 6 months now and no issues other than a rattling rear parcel shelf which I fixed myself with felt tape. In saying that I've only done about 6k km on it due to lock down and I'm giving the notion of putting it up for sale serious thought if this lock down doesn't end soon.

My last car was an F30 330d. Great car with oodles of power and refinement (as far as a diesel goes).

Mine did spin a bearing though. It had a full BMW service history and BMW replaced the engine with a brand new one out of goodwill. The engine itself would have cost €14k + VAT which they covered. I paid the labour of €3k and got a 2 year warranty on the engine.

This happened due to the long service intervals. I would advise an oil change at least once a year.

Lucky you got a replacement, what mileage was on it when it went?

I was looking for one for a while, there is a lot more 430Ds in this country than 330Ds for some reason.

    Ended up with a 640D, it’s lovely but it’s a bit of a barge!

I have a 2018 420D M Sport (Grand Coupe) for the last 2 years and I absolutely love it. It is such a great car to drive. I wouldn't consider the 420D to be underpowered in any way (it has plenty), but it I was to go again, I would go for the 430. I just think with the handling that it has, along with the extra power I'd get form the 430, it would be superb.

    Best of luck with it.

I've had a few 330s and the other half has a 430 at the minute. Absolutely great cars. Timing chain can give bother but it is rare. Theres a plastic intake pipe which can crack, this is covered under a recall but not all are done.

I think it was something like 70,000 km and the car was 7 years old.

I'd say short trips had a lot to do with it too. Engine not getting up to operating temperature.

Yeah there was a lot of contributing factors I guess but it's hard to know what exactly was the cause. Certainly the long service intervals were a factor.
