Fuel pump running constantly

    Hi all,

Im back again rooting at my passat b6 1.9tdi. The last fuel pump was on the way out and was getting hard started on certain mornings.
I bought a new pump from the Top Part autofactors close to me. I fitted the pump today and when I was putting the electrical socket back on, I accidentally damaged the red clip that holds it down. I just got a small piece of wood to chock the socket so its connected properly. My problem though is that the pump is running constantly. I have swapped out and checked the relays for this under the steering wheel and I am getting the same problem. This wasnt a problem on the last pump so Im going to hazard a guess at the obvious and say the new fuel pump is the issue.
Has anyone any experience with this, The damage I did to the clip on the electrical socket did not damage any spade connectors or working parts, its just the clip that holds the socket down in place, I have it wedged down and its connecting fine but is not turning off.
    Appreciate any input and thanks!

When you say running all the time, do you mean with the ignition on but engine not running?

Sorry yea I should have made that clearer. When I push the key in 3/4 of the way, it runs for about 2 seconds then stops, sounds normal. Then when I start the car it is constantly running. It does not run when the car is off.

If it’s a PD TDI shouldnt it be running all the time anyway?

This is ridiculously loud if that were the case, you can hear it over everything even with the sound deadening back in place and seats. You can hear it standing outside the car clearer than the engine ticking over so it couldnt be normal.

The times when it runs sound normal tbh

When you turn on ignition the fuel pump does operate for a few seconds to get fuel to the block to start the engine. Helps prevent air locks etc.

If the pump is just really loud then it might be a faulty pump.

Il try VW for a pump, this was €125, VW are surely to be twice the price or more. Car is breaking my heart to be honest from the day I bought it. Im not terribly supersticious but I really havent had much luck with it since I bought it.
I bought it over a month ago, around 125km from my house, drove fine the whole way home, as soon as I came in through my gates, oil was pissing out of the sump, I got it parked up and turned off before it was fully drained. Had it with a mechanic and he said whoever had it previously was rooting at something with the cam cover off, obviously sheered a torx socket and it fell down in, blew a hole out through the sump. Was a mystery as to where the hole came from originally as it sounded fine, wasnt a dropped rod or anything.
Anyways rant over, Thanks for your help, Il replace the pump again, and try get my money back for this one.

If it wasn't running constantly when the ignition is on, how do you suppose fuel would get to the rail?
The loft pump in the tank doesn't produce a lot of pressure, it supplies fuel under low pressure to the high pressure pump, which also supplies fuel constantly under high pressure when the engine is running in your vehicle.

    If it's loud, I'd say it's a bad pump.
