VRT question

hi all

just a question will be moving to the uk hopefully in a few months but wondering if i buy a car over there and bring it back to Ireland will i get flagged with vrt ? I will be working over there and will be buying a car there for work. Would be in the uk for approx 8 months

I don’t think being in the UK for 8 months will qualify for a VRT exception.

I think you have to own the car in the UK for at least 12 months prior to bringing it into Ireland and you have to prove it was used in the UK during that time, i.e. proof of tax, insurance, etc. If you then qualify for the VRT exemption you cannot sell the car on over here for at least 2 years or you would have to pay the VRT on it.

It's there in black and white - you have to be living there 185 days and have owned the car there 6 months and not sell the car after import for 12 months.

You will have to show actual evidence of living there and not being there for a short term work contract

My wife brought two cars back a number of years ago and revenue were very through with their enquiries
