Car was rear-ended and is a write-off. Insurance asks me to hand over logbook.

The insurance made me an offer which is still under discussion, but something threw me off when I asked them for the next steps. They said if/when I accept their offer, I'll have to hand the keys and the log book over to the Salvage company they work with.

Hand over the logbook? I was under the impression the owner is to request a change of ownership and post the logbook to the department of transport.

Btw, the car is declared a Cat D so I suppose they can repair and put on the road again. Not sure if this is relevant in any way.

You can keep the car if you like and get paid out the pre accident value less salvage if you like.

If you want the insurance company to take over the ownership then you give the keys and logbook to the salvage agent who will take over ownership of the car.

What is your issue with handing over the logbook if you are being paid in full for the agreed pre accident value of your vehicle?

What you describe is exactly what happened to me one time. I handed over the keys and book no problem. Like yours it was a Cat D. The car was crushed.

Because OP has absolutely zero certainty that the ownership will be indeed transferred.

The insurance co are going to repair it and give to a sales rep who can tear around the country and not worry about speed vans.

OP, presumably you will have a personal claim also. They will accommodate your thinking on the above.

That was exactly my concern.. What tells me they won't repair it with the cheapest way possible and put it on the road again?

Now, I was looking at the logbook itself it says "in the event of destruction of passenger cars [...] this certificate must be surrendered to the authorised treatment facility [...]".

So investigating deeper I'm realising what they said is legit, but partial. I also need to obtain a Certificate of Destruction which is a "declaration that the vehicle to which it relates will be destroyed" and that put my mind at ease with any concerns. And also allow me to claim a Refund of Motor Tax, not bad.

Here's the source - can't post links as I'm a new user so replace the space with a forward slash :)

They can get that car put back on the road if they want, they’ve bought a crashed car for X what do you expect them to do pay you full value and crush it? What they are doing is perfectly legal, Cat A/B can’t be put back on the road and you need cert of destruction for those alright.

Keep a record of all communications with the insurance company and there'll be no issues.

Optimism. One might eventually straighten the issues, but assuming no issues will arise simply because you click print is naïve.

The car is a cat d and therefore can be repaired and sold. The salvage agent will ensure the change of ownership.

This sort of transaction takes place everyday.

As others have said only a cat a and cat b must be destroyed and then a cert of destruction is issued.
