Your quickest option is to re import the car to the UK if the car has an export marker from the DVLA.

Are there tax implications for doing this?

Back in to the north no, only thing is DVLA will want a reg document to import the car , I wonder how you can provide one in that case.

See if you can find someone in the North who will re-import it and then give you the V5.

Come on like if anyone was going to buy a a foreign registered vehicle a quick Google of paperwork needed for vrt would make lot of sense . Not not like a vehicle is cheap

It’s a bollox of a system with the DVLA though. Seller probably thought the were doing they right thing. It’s a crap situation - but not funny.

I had to persuade a main dealer in Glasgow to give me the full v5. He went off and made a few calls to head office before he agreed to it. He did however say that it was the first time they had sold a car for export.

Ireland must have been the most common export country, it’s amazing how the DVLA system makes it so difficult.

I think it's a case of both buyer and seller not looking into the proper procedure for buying/selling a car for permanent export. OP is in a right pickle of a situation with it now to get it sorted.

Isn't there some UK company offering a service to retrieve V5 reg documents? Don't they charge around €150 for it?

Yes I’ve used them recently and they were great but if the car is marked as exported they won’t send out a new logbook

Its actually a really good system imo. Seller sends export slip to DVLA, car is taken out of their name. Job done and the buyer keeps the logbook. Its just a lack of understanding from uk people about the whole process. I mean if someone wanted to keep the logbook off my car I wouldn’t agree either

Doesn't it say on the V5 to give the whole lot to the purchaser if it's being exported?

It does. But it can be very difficult getting the full V5 off sellers including main dealerships. Even after showing them the procedure on the UK government's website.
