€20k budget for a fun daily

€20k to spend on a fun daily driver.

It doesn't need to be practical, it'll be my only car but it's only ever myself in the car.

I commute to work on our lovely national roads, rarely some motorway driving, even rarer for me to venture into the city.

Can't cost an arm and a leg to maintain.
    Anything better than terrible mpg.
€1250 is my max for road tax, anything beyond that and I might actually cry handing it over.

I just want something engaging to drive.

I've currently got a Golf MK7 2.0 TDI and it's fine, comfortable, reliable and boring.. I've come from an old Mx-5 to this and all the heated seats, noise deadening and Sat Nav don't make up for the lack of fun, for want of a better word.

I've looked into the Mk7 GTI, seemingly great car but I don't know if it's going to do what I want it to, it's got more power but does the GTI actually improve on handling, steering feel, weight/balance?

Mx-5 ND is high on my list, don't care much for the convertible-ness, but that's what's in budget.
They're seemingly cheap to maintain, run and insure too which is great.

Toyota GT86 - €750 a year to tax isn't ideal but it's manageable, I'd be going from a 2016 to a 2013 but that really doesn't bother me (it'll bother those around me, 'why did you downgrade!?').

Fiesta ST - What I probably should have bought first time round, I'm very tempted, but can I get something 'better' for €20k?
I didn't buy it because I thought it'd be too small and too uncomfortable, I realise now I don't really care if it is.

Abarth - 595 Comp is in budget, sounds silly and they're a little different.

Golf R is out of budget, Lotus Elise too (my ideal car).

Integra Dc5 Type R, someone somewhere will actually insure me, but an 04 for €13k as a daily?

Any Porsche is a no go because of insurance, and tax, and maintenance costs.

    Any other suggestions?
