Charged import VAT incorrectly?

    I was charged 23% vat on an item I purchased in the states. The item should have been due at the second rate reduced! However instead of paying 9% I paid 23%. Can I claim this back and is there a time limit. It happened over 2 years ago?

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Your first port of call should be the carrier or customs broker who cleared the shipment through customs.

    Not sure what the time limit is.

    Questions;

    are you VAT registered?
    was the item imported for your business?

    The amount of money taking illegally in Ireland through these practices must be in the billions.

    Who are you accusing here? It is the importer's responsibility at all times to ensure that the correct declaration is made to customs at time of importation.

    Thanks for reply. I've emailed the delivery company who collected the money.

    I am not a business. I won an auction in the states and paid a hefty charge upon delivery only to realise now the charge may have been completely wrong.

    Not knowing the commodity makes it impossible to asses the rate of VAT applicable. Feel free to PM me with details and I will take a look at it for you.

    Cheers,
