Can you deallocate tax credits from an employer?

Suppose you are working in a 9-5.

Can you remove your tax credits from that employer so that you just pay the higher rates of tax on the income? Then either apply them to a side stream of income, or claim back at the end of the year?

Or do you have to assign them to another employer?

You certainly could: there was an option to do this where you could allocate some of your credits to <<I don't know what it was called>>.

I'd expect this is still there, but cannot confirm cos I haven't done it.
