Car was in an accident and towed away as a write-off. Signed change of ownership form to towing company and payed the fee. I requested an RF120 form this week in the post to claim the refund of tax (out in September).

The form asked where the car is being scrapped at. Do i need to get the towing company involved as they had mentioned that they will scrap the vehicle. How does this all work.

    TIA

as they now own it, I'd guess it's them that can claim the refund.

    Refunds of motor tax
It is possible in certain circumstances to claim a refund of motor tax. Your application for a refund should be made directly to your local Motor Tax Office on Form RF120 (pdf). You can claim a refund of motor tax if:

The vehicle has been scrapped, destroyed or sent permanently out of the State
The vehicle has been stolen and has not been recovered by the owner
The vehicle has not been taken out or used in a public place at any time since the issue of the current disc
The owner of the vehicle has stopped using the vehicle because of illness, injury or other physical disability
The owner of the vehicle has stopped using the vehicle because they are absent from the country for business or educational purposes
The owner of the vehicle has stopped using the vehicle because of service overseas with the Defence Forces
Tax discs must be surrendered immediately as refunds are generally calculated from the first of the month after the disc is surrendered. A minimum of three unexpired whole calendar months must be left on the disc when surrendered.

    Do you have the disc?

The towing company should have issued you with a certificate of destruction. You need this to claim back motor tax afaik otherwise you have no proof the car was scrapped. There needs to be a minimum of 3 months tax left in order to claim the remainder tax back.

The problem is the towing company are not a scrapyard/ATF and you've given them ownership now, so technically the tax is now theirs to reclaim.

If the towing company was an ATF, they should have issued you a certificate of destruction as said above.

It's possible the towing company will sell the car for scrap & reclaim the tax, or possibly even sell the car on for repair if it's only an 'economic' write off.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.
