Spilled wine on new Macbook air M1

Hi. I spilled some wine on a new Macbook Air and the USB C port has stopped working. I have stupidly since switched it on as i didnt think enough had spilled on it to cause a problem. I can live without one USB port but I would like to have it checked and possibly cleaned to reduce further damage.

Or does the fact it has been switched on and used mean a cleaning will do nothing more cost me money.

I would stop turning on. Did you ask Apple.

Bring it to an Apple shop to have them examine it. Start thinking about claiming off house insuramce.

Leave it off and put it in a box filled with rice. That will dry it out and prevent further damage

Wine and things like Coke are sticky. They don't go away or evaporate like water would.

I suspect you'd need a very specialised place to fix the USB port on a M1. Apple increasingly don't let third party places repair their machines and the M1 is basically just one circuit board.

I am curious - which wine was it?

This is an urban myth, and usually ends up damaging the boards more when you end up having to scrape rice off it.

It's meant to separated from the rice.

It won't work with wine anyway.

Once you turn it on the damage is done. Anything after that is a bonus.

Things like wine and coke are corrosive. They may still be damaging the board until they are cleaned off.

I had a old laptop which had soft drink split on it. The dust and dirt all stuck inside blocked vents and fans damaged the keys. Used to get super hot. Luckily I could take them apart easily and replace the parts. Took a good while to clean it out.

New M1 I assume it's an airbook has no fans. But I expect is almost impossible to take apart unless you have the tools and some experience. I expect there are probably no spare parts for them yet.

Thats what i was thinking. But it being wine it might be worth cleaning anyway.

Wine contains sugar. When it dries to the PCB and you turn it on its when the damage occurs. You're unlikely to fix this laptop.

I didn't say put the motherboard in rice. It certainly does work soaking up moisture.

You might get lucky if it gets cleaned off quickly enough.
