Looking for some advice, selling a car because i have no use for it, have company van so have used car very little in past year.
Car is pretty old but has 12 months test and overall running very well but has a problem that costs a couple of hundred to fix.
Car is worth about 1500 in my opinion but i dont think i will get 1700/1800 if i fix it.
How should i go about selling it without losing too much on it or without getting messers with stupid offers.
Tried to sell a car once before on done deal and it was absolute hardship.
    Thanks in advance

What the car is and what the problem is would have a huge bearing on any answer

    Thanks for your response.
    05 VW Golf.
Water pump needs replacing so would do the belt as well.
Is it worthwhile fixing or selling as is? is my valuation crazy?

€1500 seems a bit high for an 05 Golf unless it’s something special.
I certainly wouldn’t be putting any money into it.

Your valuation is off the wall unless it’s low mileage and mint but you’ll have to get the belt done to sell it as you’ll get offered pittance otherwise.

Joe Public won’t buy an expensive car with an issue.

I imagine this is worth more like 1200 with the belt done, you'll find it very hard to shift a golf that needs serious work when the market is already flooded.

You will not recuperate the belt/pump money in sales price.
Try selling it cheap and let the new owner worry about that bit.

Funnily enough a buddy sold his wifes 06 golf for 1500 the same day he advertised for 1700. Base spec with 180k kms.

What ever you do decide I'd recommend selling it on Facebook market place. Shifted a car very easy on it.

People pay way to much for older Golfs, specially if they are any way tidy.

I would say 1500 is realistic if it isn't too shabby.

That being said, no way would i put a timing belt kit on it. Is it leaking coolant and that's why you are changing the pump? If so, that would change things IMO.

Would you get 1100 for it needing a water pump?
If not and you think you’d get €1500 with it done, then it’s worth doing.

Would the type of engine in the car have any bearing on what OP's Golf might go for ?

Definitely, 1.4’s make good money, larger engines not so much due to the tax and the fact new drivers cant get insured on them

    Update:
    It was a 1.9tdi Golf.
Decided to put it up for sale at e1600, and sold it the next day for e1200.
    Happy enough with that.
    Cheers for the input folks.
