Laptop losing Wifi connection

My laptop keeps losing WIFI connection despite signal being strong. Reconnecting by going into settings works most times but is a bit hit and miss. It is an Dell XPS 12 Intel i5 and otherwise works fine. I have installed a WIFI repeater that has made a little difference, but not much. Any ideas what could be wrong?

wifi card in laptop could be defective

try buying a usb wifi dongle - get a dual-band one if you need 5Ghz
