Just wondering about the best deal for a sim card for a house alarm. Used to be able to get a payg sim top up for 10 euro every couple of months. Are these tariffs still available?

That's 11 euro a month not a tenner every couple of months. While it is a great deal for a phone, less so for an alarm.

What OP wants is an M2M sim (machine to machine). These are cheap, have paltry data/minutes/sms included BUT do not need regular top ups etc to stay active. I think some providers even do more robust cards for outdoor/harsh applications. You can also get a variant called a 'roaming m2m' where the sim is from a bogus foreign 'home' network - this is so it can 'roam' on any Irish network, and reduce its chances of losing signal - think GSM trackers for cars etc

The keyword M2M sim will bring up plenty of options if you Google it
