Is there anything to stop me selling a car whose tax is out by a year, to a friend, and rebuying the car off her, immediately ( more or less), thereby avoiding the tax? Thanks

Only concern is perhaps around insurance for the time when it's awaiting change back to you. Insurer may seek proof of ownership should a claim be made in the time it's sold and bought back, should only be 2 weeks max.
