Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

2016 Passat - DAB radio?

    Hi all,

Bit of a weird one. I'm currently contemplating buying a 2016 Passat. Original Irish car, and it has the Discover Pro MIB2 infotainment system fitted. When on a test drive, I noticed that there were only two radio bands available - FM & AM. No DAB.

I know there isn't much on DAB at the moment, but I also have a 2013 Golf which has the older Discover MIB infotainment, and I quite like having the option.

In the UK, DAB was fitted as standard. Surely the same hardware was fitted for the ROI market? Is it just a matter for getting it activated via software? Sales person didn't seem to know.

I've never seen DAB on any car, what can you get on DAB in the Golf? Unless you're travelling to the UK frequently I wouldn't bother there's no broadcaster bothering with DAB here in Ireland.

There are about a dozen DAB radio stations available in Ireland. 2FM, TodayFM and others are brocade over DAB here.

Yeah, you can't get much, but there is some content that's not on FM.

Primarily I use it for RTE Gold - decent music and no ads. There is also a pirate mux broadcasting an interesting mix of stations, none of which are on FM. Not a compelling argument for DAB by any means, but it's a feature I like to have.

With the advent of DAB across Europe, I struggle to think that VW's infotainment hardware is in different for the ROI market, which makes me think that DAB is disabled by software......

Is that nationwide or just in the cities?

I have it here in Limerick and live about 20km from the city. I couldn't tell you if it covers the entire country.

Nah, it’s only in population centres really. I don’t listen to radio much but DAB is much higher quality audio and the likes of RTE Gold is listenable because of minimal presenting.

Once you head north of Limerick towards Clare it starts breaking up.

They’re going to scrap DAB in Ireland unfortunately.
