    Hi folks,
Am getting NCT done later this morning.....it’s lashing rain here and around -2 degrees currently!!....not the kind of weather you want to be standing out in while you wait for your car to be checked over!

Is it still the case you are not allowed wait in the normal ‘reception area‘ or waiting room....and have to wait outside the test centre....while test is underway because of Covid restrictions or will common sense prevail during inclement weather?

Thanks for any replies in next few hours.....have test just after 9am.

I'd imagine that their will be fewer people than normal getting a car tested at that hour so hopefully you'll be allowed to wait inside. Bring a rain jacket and cap just in case and go to the sheltered side of the building if necessary. Best of luck with the test.

I’d toughen up, it’s a bit of weather. Wrap up. You should be more worried about the virus than a bit of rain.

We got our nct done last week, the waiting area was open with limited seats. Best of luck.

Is there someone from your household who could drive there too and you could sit in their car?

Could be worse, I'm in the slieve blooms and heavy, heavy snow. I can't say yes or no but some allowances should be offered re protection from the elements, good luck with test

Thanks for replies....no one available to wait for me while test is done....am just coming out of having a bad flu (not Covid)......and don’t need a freezing this morning.....it’s snowing now to add insult to injury!!

It does specifically say on their booking info now, be prepared to have to wait outside and dress appropriately and that if you aren't prepared or in a position to have to do that to please reschedule.

Waiting areas are open in test centres but are first come first serve with very low capacity due to social distancing.

A lot of places now have a coffee van outside so at least you can grab a tea or coffee while waiting.

Definitely best to wrap up warm and bring a good warm waterproof jacket.

For a country that gets so much rain and inclement weather I’m always amazed at the amount of people who don’t possess clothing suitable to our climate !

Tell that to elderly people, pregnant women and people with medical conditions.

Go stand in your back garden right now for 30 minutes straight and report back to us.

Had to wait outside when my car was being tested on Wednesday, was only waiting about half an hour though :)

Couldn’t those people get someone else to NCT their car? There used to be companies that you could pay to do it for you, maybe they’re still operating.

At a push, they could probably postpone it until the waiting areas are fully open again. It’s not like AGS strictly enforce NCT anyway.

Maybe they can be the ones you graciously allow to use the waiting area.
Try walk around in circles and you’ll warm up.

A lot of people are not in the position to get others to do their NCT for them. Especially elderly people etc who may be isolated.

In regards to other companies doing it for you, I've never heard of those and I doubt most elderly people are in the position to know about these or afford them either.

Tell your 80 year old grandmother to walk in circles to warm up in the pisses of rain and gale force wind.

When she falls and breaks her hip report back to us.

Also tell that to my 40 year old cousin with severe parkinsons who can't stand for longer than 5 minutes.

The point being that it's not fair to just say "tough **** man up" because not everyone is a fit healthy inconsiderate 20 year old.

The waiting area was open in the ones I've been at during covid just with limited seating. But the lifts don't work usually and you'd have to queue and walk from the car then through the center and then walk back to the car.

If you can't walk or stand. How would you normally do this.

If they are isolating there's a bigger risk from them going to the NCT centre than getting a friend/relative to bring their car to be tested and they've the added benefit of not having to deal with any of the other issues you raised.

The NCT have special arrangements in place for vulnerable people. The details are on the website.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,367 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

-2C is a temperature we see every Winter, it's nothing new. I frequently see sub zero temperatures leaving work on the night shift when defrosting the car. If you know you're going to be outside just wrap up warm, it's no different to putting a jacket on in the rain.

Most places have limited seating, I'm sure they would accommodate someone if needed. I had to stand outside in the rain when getting tyres on my mam's car, I was the only one there and seats were more than 2m away from the receptionist. I'm sure if it was needed the would let you in.

I’d toughen up, it’s a bit of weather. Wrap up. You should be more worried about the virus than a bit of rain.

This was the forecast for today
Ireland is set for a weekend from hell as snow, ice, gale-force winds and rain all batter the country.

Met Eireann believes up to 5cm of snow will fall, on a day when Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Waterford are each expected to be hit by 90km/h winds.

"Some freezing rain possible locally, bringing very slippy conditions too. Outbreaks of rain and drizzle elsewhere, with heavy persistent rain across southern counties, bringing the ongoing risk of flooding here.

It’s not a bit of rain.

If an relative of mine posted the OP, I’d tell them to see if the waiting room was open. If not reschedule

Advising OP to tough it out in those conditions is bizzare.

The country has lost its mind

Did you read my post before getting hysterical?

If you are fit and healthy then man up and be considerate of the vulnerable. If not use the facilities.

I don’t get the logic. Risk exposing yourself and others to virus because it is chilly out.

Or if you feel fragile postpone.

The Govt have decided the risk at the NCT is low. Also that if you need to get the car fixed. That bringing it to garage or mechanic is low. That there is no problems getting parts due to Brexit.

It's obviously a well thought out plan. There's nothing to complain about.

They’ve decided the risk is low given that social distancing is in operation and anyone with a bit of sense would realise its better to wrap up warm and stand outside for a bit than put people in unnecessary danger.

I've had two NCT under lockdowns. In both cases the center was open. Just with only every third chair available. Never had to stand outside and they hadn't facilitated it with an external speaker or anything. One of those is due again in march. Oddly the internal speaker is working. It had been broken for years. I've always had to guess to know when to go to the desk. I've never found the NCT website to very accurate about what going on. Was the same when the lifts were broken. Dire communication.

I had to get tires fixed recently. That place had a garden shed/pagoda set up for bad weather with chairs and no one allowed in the building, except to pay. Amazing they can do it but the NCT can't.

Okay so don’t leave the inside space for all these vulnerable people you’re all concerned about?

People need to employ common sense rather than waiting to be told what to do.

There are no options to avoid the NCT so you have no choice.
