I was driving 80km through a very short 60km patch onto a main 80km road, a Garda car passed me going the opposite direction doing about the speed same if not faster, can the Garda car detect the speed I was going?

    No.

Traffic patrol cars are generally only equipped to detect pursuit speeds relative to itself. An accurate detection of speed in the opposite direction requires a fixed position, eg a camera van.

If they had a problem with your speed, they would have turned around and pulled you over for it.

That's a completely different scenario then what was asked.
    No they cannot.
Most Garda patrol cars aren't fitted with ANPR cameras, in fact even a good chunk of the RPU cars are not fitted with ANPR and even if they are, they are incapable of detecting the speed of an oncoming vehicle.

No, they can form an opinion though, that you were going too fast...

They can't ticket you for it though, any prosecution would need proof of speed. They could of course go the route of careless/inconsiderate driving but it would be fairly ropey

Thats a bit high tech for the Gardai, to be fair. I don't even think the ANPR kit properly fits the hyundai i40?

As far as I am aware, at the moment all Gardai can do, if their own car is moving, is form an opinion, and that doesn't have legs, legally, unless they have a witness (usually another garda in the car, but the traffic lads are generally on their own).

It's all speed vans or speed guns, at the moment.

Hi. I was stopped by an unmarked garda car today. The garda said that he detected me doing 88km in a 60km zone, whilst he was passing me in the other direction. I was really confused as I was certain I was not driving at that speed. The more I think of it I don't know how he was able to accurately detect my speed whilst driving in the opposite direction.

Garda must stop you to show you what speed you were doing as it's handheld

That didn't really happen the way your describing it or just plain didn't happen.

Are you sure it was a Garda?
