I have a little project on the go at the moment. Will be using a lot of 80mm box iron.

DO steel suppliers cut up the steel into correct sizes if asked/paid extra. I dont have a bandsaw and I want the steel cut dead straight to make it easier for welding.

I would need the steel in 16ft lengths and 4ft lengths. There would be more 4ft lengths though.

    Where are you based?

Steel stockist wont but engineering shops might.
    Can you collect?

I would suggest speaking to Impact Ireland or similar - they will point you in the right direction.

It depends where you but it from?

If you are getting it from big steel suppliers like Heitons, not a hope they will touch it. They want to sell steel by the ton and truckload, out the gap, good luck.

If you go to a smaller engineering supplier's or agri supplier who sell steel they will definitely chop it to lengths for you. Some of the co-ops like Glanbia or Diarygold sell a limited selection of commonly used steel sizes, and they will usually be able to cut to lengths. They will just cut to approx length though, don't be expecting bevels or shamfers, or cuts that are precisely square or millimeter accuracy. But an engineering type supplier would probably do that if they are set up for it and you specifically ask for it.

The local steel merchant here in kilbeggan cuts it, even welds it if he's not busy, has a guillotine for the flat galvanise as well

I actually have one of these chopsaws. Its only so-so. It needs brushes at the moment too and is out of action. Cutting 80mm box iron was challenging enough for it. Often you would have to turn the metal length as with a small bit of wear on the blade it wouldnt cut through. Now mine only takes abrasive disks which wear down anyway.

The whole thing would be much easier if i could buy collected. My steel place is duggans steel. I can collect it after if needs be.

Chadwicks, formerly Heaton Buckley in Limerick will cut steel to length, but they get a guy in with a torch, so cut is very rough.
Check beforehand how they cut it. A bandsaw will cut a lot cleaner.
Banner Steel in Clarecastle, Clare will cut to lengths too. They have bandsaw.

Ring around in your area, bound to be someone who will cut it to length. I've cut 200x100 mm I beams using a 3" grinder and thin discs. There's a knack to it. Cut better than any bandsaw.
