Why is it that with some hot chocolates the instructions say to add hot milk and with others it's hot water?? I really need an answer to this.

It has to be milk. Hot chocolate with water is horrible!

Well I'm drinking it with water because if I drank it with milk I'd have none left for my fookin tea. Plus it takes a lot less effort to fill the kettle and hit the switch compared to putting milk in a saucepan and having to make sure it doesn't overheat, hence potentially leading to a messy cleaning job, and I'm basically a lazy k.unt.

When it's those little sachets, I add water and top it up with milk

Milk and water. That way the water dilutes the milk down a bit:)

Milk. Mug. Microwave. 2 mins. Done!

The people watching their weight would opt for hot water. But if you are going for a really nice hot chocolate; heat a saucepan of milk, when it's getting hot add some broken Cadbury dairy milk, let that melt and then add 4 heaped teaspoons of Cadbury hot chocolate powder and stir. Pour into a cup and add marshmallows on top or cream. I don't bother with cream myself it's luscious enough with the extra chocolate in it. Enjoy!!

I add milk and stir it until it's mixed well then add hot water cos I'm a lazy bastard.
Milk all the way if I could be arsed.

Warm the milk, don't boil it!

Milk heated (not boiled )in a saucepan on the hob. Add it slowly to three heaped teaspoons of hot chocolate powder, stirring continuously.
Add a half dozen Maltesers rather than marshmallows, if you're feeling decadent.
Also, if you have a milk frother, use that to mix rather than a spoon.

Because some hot chocolate powders already have milk powder in them, so water is unnecessary. But they are generally inferior to the hot chocolates that require milk.

Haven't read the packaging in detail, but I assume it's to do with UHT being sh1te

Oh god MILK my granny used to use water and I just couldnt stomach it. Then she relented and used 50% water and 50% milk still thought it was horrid. She said she did it for my health as milk was bad for me but I was suspicious she was doing it because water was cheaper

Milk, 55% chocolate chips and a splash of vanilla. Just had one an hour or so ago. Powder is fine if that's all you have but it'll be sweeter and it's not going to be as rich, but using water instead of milk is unforgivable.

I know it's not the same but I'm definitely having a hot chocolate with Cointreau later.

    Milk, of course!

Well the ones that say add water already have milk powder in them. I find most are OK with just water, but usually I'll finish them off with a dash of milk.

Obviously using water to make hot chocolate that has no milk powder already in it is gonna be rank.

Heaped T spoon of real 100% cocoa powder + 1 of sugar, add a drop of milk, stir to a paste while heating milk, not boiling, add hot milk (and whatever you fancy) enjoy.

Forget about 'Drinking Chocolate' mixes which are mostly sugar and almost no cocoa solids. If it says 'add water' it contains powdered milk and who knows what other chemical to get it to blend.

Milk, or fake milk if like me you're allergic. Cashew nut or almond milk are the best for that. Had one last, frothy from the aeroccino, with whittards salted caramel hot chocolate. Amazing..

I'd use only milk, with some added milk chocolate melted into it.

Rum with hot chocolate is what you want. Had it while skiing in Austria. Lovely.

Milk, at least that's it for me.

Am I the only one that adds chocolate milk?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,255 ✭✭✭lucalux

Heat milk to hot, but not boiling in a pan, then crack in some real 60/70% cocoa solids chocolate, (any of the madagascan/single origin type bars in aldi/lidl are good for this) melt and add vanilla extract (not essence!) if you fancy it.
Sweeten if you need to with some sugar if you like, maple syrup works well too if you like that taste.

None of this palm oil filled, whey powdered mainly-sugar muck you get masquerading as chocolate drinks

    Add alcohol as required:)
