    Hi guys

I'm hopin someone here may be able to help me. My partner is looking to buy a jeep to help my dad out on the farm. Because we ourselves dont have a herd or flock number the tax would be quite expensive.

Is there any way around this as it would be used for farm work?

    Thank you

It used to vary depending on which was your local county council. Some offices were more relaxed than others.

Last time I tried, about 4 years ago, I couldn’t get commercial tax as I had no herd number or vat number.

Realistically could the herd owner not register it their name?

Ya we were thinking that but does the jeep not have to be in our name for insurance purposes?

What I did previously was register it to the herd owner as paid him the cost of insurance.

The jeep logbook was in the herdowners name.

    It wasn’t ideal.

At the time I remember reading long threads on the issue here

Ya we were reading them too but they're so old now we thought so much as prob changed and lookin for current info. See dad already has his own jeep insured so prob cant insure 2 jeeps?! Or can ya maybe ya can?! And then my partner doesn't have his own insurance policy

Check the Motor Tax section on the website of your own Local Authority.

There will be a list of the documentation they require to tax a commercial for the first time in your name.

If you can supply what they ask for you will be ok.

Renewals can be done online so you only have to do this once.

My father taxes his van commercial by telling the gardai when he's getting a new van that he's helping me out on the farm, collecting feed ect, herd number is in my name but never has had an issue, just goes in and tells them the truth, if that's any addition to you, thinking of it now I dont even think he needed to give a herd number or anything to verify it, he's definitely never asked me for it and he wouldn't know it himself?

Great thank you. I'll get him to ask the gardai and see what they say.

If he's retired, the commercial isn't going to work.

Talking to the Gardaí is no good. It's your local council tax office you need to talk to to see what documents they require.
