    hi guys
Im thinking of upgrading my 16 yr old car for something a bit better, looking at the likes of a Mondeo/Avensis etc, budget around 10 - 12K, majority of my car journeys are short so I think petrol is the way to go, anytime I browse 2nd hand cards on the likes of Donedeal its mostly diesel cars, not many petrol cars, and the petrol cars seem to be more expensive than petrol cars.
Is it that the demand nowadays for 2nd hand cars is for petrol and nobody wants diesel?

Because anyone buying family cars over the last decade or so has been buying diesel.

    Probably two reasons.
Demand for petrol cars is high.
Supply of petrol cars is low, as already mentioned everyone was buying diesels in the last 10 years.

thanks to the greens and the government incentivizing diesels, a quick look on donedeal, petrol, saloon, 10- 12k shows 34 cars. change to estates and theirs currently 39 cars. everything else thats petrol is either going to be small hatchbacks or newer more expensive cars when petrol started to come back.

Some of us have petrol cars ready to trade in but have to wait months for our new cars to arrive in the country. It all delays the availability of second hands.

Most cars since around 2008 the size of a Mondeo or Avensis would have been sold here in diesel mainly because they became cheaper to buy and in alot of cases cheaper to tax. Demand dropped and manufacturers didn't bother bringing them in anymore. The few that were sold tend to be more expense due to demand. Also many people have started buying crossovers instead of Avensis and Mondeo traditional saloons in the last 5 years or so. The likes of the Avensis and Mondeo are no longer made now.

Another factor is how rubbish power-wise entry level petrols were in comparison to entry level diesels.

Plenty of Hybrid Prius in that price bracket, or petrol Accord and Mazda 6 for around €2-3k.

90% of there used stock is still diesel. Most of these are pretty young cars too.

hi all, so I have been looking for a few weeks now for a 2nd hand petrol car in the Limerick area, around 10 - 12K price range, and all that seems to be available is the small cars eg Micras, Fiestas etc. On the other hand lots of great looking diesel cars in my price range. Would I be mad to consider buying a diesel? - 90% of my journeys are short range, ie 5 - 10K range....or should I just keep searching for a petrol?

The main problem with buying a diesel for short journeys is the DPF, it tends to get clogged unless you drive the car long enough for its regeneration to run.
Note that removing the DPF is illegal, but garages offers this service anyway.

Traditional "family car" market has vaporised, those drivers are all in SUVs now.

Stunning car. Only problem is it is in Belfast.

Best looking one in the Country maybe and certainly the classiest.

I find most of them are smaller inside than you think.
