Fiat Punto windshield wiper problem

I've the lend of a 2002 Fiat Punto and it has a strange wiper problem. When I push the stalk down to turn them on, they wipe up OK but then crawl at a kind of stagger on the way back down. It's the same on the faster 2nd setting down of the stalk. What's confusing me that it's not the splines or something is that if I push the stalk up for just one wipe, the wiper goes up and back at speed without any problem. Anyone?

Just an update on this, I'm thinking it might be the relay if there is one??
On further investigation (as I said, the car is strange to me as I only have it on loan), the wipers work without issue on every setting except intermittent. On high speed and low speed they wipe continuously. On intermittent they wipe up once and then struggle after that. Pushing the stalk up for a manual wipe - the wiper flies up and back if the stalk is held but if the stalk is released after activating the manual wipe, the wiper blade immediately starts to struggle as soon as the stalk is released. When the wiper is struggling there is a lot of clicking going on somewhere in the dash around the clocks.

Was a common thing with them even when they were new.Remove the plate off the top of the motor & clean the grease out of the contacts.

Just an update on this...I'm down to one wiper only now

I might see if I can get the clips first to see if they'll hold the linkage together - looks like alright weather for the rest of the week...
