Changed parking brake cable -> smelling burning from the rear

Thread title says it all, I have been concerned. I got this done today, I can find online it says you may smell burning after changing brake pads but nothing about parking brake cable. I smelt it first inside the car as I drove home from the garage, then it went away. I knelt down by the rear wheels when home and could smell it.

The situation was I failed the NCT, one of the reasons was parking brake performance (12%). When I used to park on any sort of an incline I'd get a screeching sound from the rear and the car would roll a bit, I could push the car back with my hand if the slope was steep enough.

After getting it done I went to a nearby slope and the car still rolled back and made the noise, it just rolled back less and the noice wasn't so loud :(

I went to a garage they sprayed some spray onto it, they said it was rusty and for it to loosen up. Fast forward a few days I noticed no change, the garage said I'd need to change the cable so, I googled the issue and spoke to a few friends, the consensus was also that a cable change was required.

I changed rear brake discs, callipers and pads in October (calliper seized), I could tell this because of the crunching sound - this sound has not returned since, it's a different sound to what I'm getting with the parking brake.

Many thanks - hoping to go back to NCT this weekend

Car is A3 2006 Sportsback TDI
