Currently promoted to acting supervisor in the company I work for after working my way up as an operator

I have been doing it now for 1 year and have received positive feedback from my manager and customers and exceeded all targets

I'm now been transferred to the largest building we have due to retirement of that buildings supervisor

Can they keep me on acting role or do the have to give me the role permanently after a certain point ?

I plan to raise this matter with my manager within the week ,Would just like to know my options before I approach the matter

The best thing is to discuss with your manager what the future plans entail for a permanent role as supervisor.

Are you currently getting paid any extra for the acting supervisor role ? Really should be compensated in some fashion for extra responsibilities.

How many people are you looking after ? What does the role involve ?

Bear in mind you can look at this as getting experience so far which should put you in the driving seat for a permanent role if it becomes available.

    Best of Luck......

I'd discuss it with a subtle attitude you intend to leave the place if you are not made permanent. Make it appear you have lots of irons in the fire.

1 year is quite a long time to be in an 'Acting' capacity.

Have you had a Performance Review? If not, I would request one so that your performance is recognised, and you can formally ask questions regarding your role and salary.

(Just beware that 'Lockdown' is being used as an excuse for inaction by many people - only some of which is justified IMO!)

I would approach this cautiously. You are clearly getting a lot of experience and learning a lot in the position, and this will stand to you going forward. But I agree that it cannot continue indefinitely. On the down side, lots things have been suspended/not been done, because of uncertainty associated with Covid.

A good practice is to sandwich a negative in between two positives.

So I would ask for the opportunity to have a chat with your supervisor.
At the outset, state how much you are enjoying your current position, enjoying learning so much and gaining so much experience. Then state that a full year has gone by and you feel you have grown into the role. At this point ask, if what the likelihood of you being made permanent in the role.

Finally regardless of the answer , ask about training courses you could take to enhance your performance in the role. How you could learn more and thus benefit the company more.

You have got to the point, where, when things get back to a level of normality, you will either become permanent in that role or be looking for a similar permanent role somewhere else. Regardless, you will need to have management on your side. You don't want to be seen as upsetting the apple cart. Phrase your terminology in you wanting the organisation to benefit from your future training. Frame everything as being for the benefit of the organisation, rather than your personal benefit. Make it look as if you are an enthusiastic team player. (Even if all you want is to be permanent in the role with the relevant salary).

    Thanks for all the help

Covid hasn't impacted us in the slightest regards work load, we are actually busier than ever

My roles including managing the upkeep of the building, timekeeping and attendance, performance reviews on employees, kpi pack for management and customers ,dealing with Hr and managing the wok flow plus other roles

I have a very good relationship with my manager who is always encouraging us to better ourselves but its trying to get approval from the director leve for the permanent position which will be the hard part

I do feel a year has been a long time especially within my 1st month in the role -Covid struck and had to split the 3 in 3 and deal with all the challenges from that side

I don't blame you, a full year like it's taking the piss. I mean if you upped and left they'd have to try and get someone new in and have to advertise for a permanent position.

Or would your gut say they'd just draw another "temp" in from the current employees?

I'd be putting it on the CV and applying for other roles tbh, I've seen these sort of situations plenty of times and next thing you'll be introduced to the new permanent and you'll be told you are training them in before going back to your old role and it sounds like you wouldn't want that.

Maybe your boss reads boards and recognised your situation.
