Have moved into a house with an older Phonewatch Simon XT system. Is it worth getting this upgraded to a more modern and neater system or just waste of money?

Phone watch itself is a waste of money imo. You'll usually find it installed in a home owned by OAPS. It's a very overpriced setup

Are there better options? It’s the only One I know of

HKC do totally wireless alarms. There is an app where you can control the alarm. The app will notify you if the alarm is going off and what zone. You can add carbon monoxide alarm, smoke alarm and heat detection.

With the app you don't need to have the system but if you want the system monitored then you can have this service too.

You could use a UTC hybrid panel with 868 receiver to give you a newer system. You can also connect to a free app and your wifi for free notification.
