What type of person does being a guard suit?

I graduated in business last August and I don’t really fancy working in an office, sitting at a desk on a computer all day. The idea of being a guard popped into my head recently and is really appealing - being on the move and each day being different. I’d like to know though, what type of person does this type of job suit? I'd just like to make sure it would suit me.

Also, what’s the recruitment process like and how long would it likely take to be recruited? Looking through threads it looks like it would take a while.

I'm not a garda but had aspirations of being one when I was younger. I imagine the type of person a garda would suit would be someone mentally tough with a strong motivation to want to do the job day in day out and keep communities safe despite the huge challenges in both the work schedule and the work environment itself. I guess it can be different depending on which avenue you go down (i.e. specialist roles) but if you want a hands on experience you can apply for the reserve garda to get a feel of what it is like and see if it's for you if you're having really strong thoughts. Getting involved with the police I see as such a huge leap as it's such a vocational career, if you don't like it there's less avenues to branch out into another career when you're a few years down the road. If it's something you want to do, it's best to speak to as many people and get as much insight as possible, I'm glad I did that myself as it prevented me from ever trying to join as I knew it wasn't for me but I never would have known if I didn't speak to both serving gardai and ex gardai.
