The Good Parts of 2021

I was just thinking that there is an awful lot of negativity about our current "situation", the Lockdown and the excessive amounts of online moaning, wallowing and anger. Wouldn't it be nice to celebrate as much of the "good" things in 2021 as we can? I mean, instead of just whinging about pub closures and ‘The Late Late Show’.

I'll start us off. The 6 Nations is back!! Bloody fantastic news and something we can all look forward to. While the tournament may not be as exciting, for us, as in its heyday when ‘Drico’, ‘ROG’ and ‘POC’ were striding the fields like colossi, there is still a lot to get excited about. We’ve got some new “talent” emerging, I’m well aware that our cover at 10 is lacking but we’re still a few years out from a World Cup and we’ve got Carbery hoping to return, young Ben Healy flying it for Munster and a hot prospect in Harry Byrne coming through at Leinster.

This is a proper sport with real grit, determination, intelligence and skill on display for all to see. A sport that is “followed” by the best and the brightest in Ireland. Not depressing “sludge” like a live stream of a LOI match that looks something akin to a Serie B game from the 80s or the weak snorefest that the GAA bogball has become.

I’m, also, well aware that watching from home isn't the same as heading over to Lansdowne Road and that supping “tins”never be the same as downing a few "sticks" of Heinomite in Searsons, it's still something bloody great and well worth getting excited about. 2 games today to start things off then tomorrow, with the whiff of cordite hanging in the air, we take on the Welsh and, hopefully, get a bit of revenge for their lack of support with our World Cup “bid” and for their no show in 72.

What else in 2021 are you getting “excited” about? With the vaccines on the horizon, everyone staying the course, listening to the experts and the government “advice”, this really is the time to be looking forward, while sticking to the guidelines, of course.

Should, also, give an honourable “mention” to the Super Bowl on tomorrow night, should be a good show.

I cannot wait to get back to coaching kids in hurling and camogie. we've 3 2020 camogie finals to play and we'll be in contention for another 3 this season, if we get going early enough. but it's not just about the winning - even if we only get to train it'll be enough.

The Killers in Malahide, if it goes ahead.

Travelling up and down the country to meet clients

    holidays somewhere in Ireland

    my daughters 18th

    teaching her to drive

kids getting back to school, being able to meet their friends etc

    having The Craic.

edit : getting the nod from Aongus to back his horse before it's first race. ;)

a reduction in the use of quotation marks to dramatise words or phrases that really don't require them. really looking forward to that.

When the lockdown happened I decided to invest in an indoor golf simulator setup. I was already a low handicap golfer, but I now feel my game is as sharp as it has ever been. Added almost 20 yards to my drive, and my long irons are just flawless. Really looking forward to getting back out on the course in 2021, and maybe even a trip back to Ireland to play a few of the links courses on the west coast. I’m keen to see if my hypothesis is true - that I’m within a stroke or two of being a scratch golfer.

I also bought a horse last year and it’s due its first run later in the year. Has a good pedigree, and the trainer reports he’s maturing nicely, but you just never know what you’re going to get with a horse.

Great question but I'm so distracted trying to figure of the use of your quotation marks I can't even think straight!

Help me out, what's your code?

I don't normally get excited about the 6 nations but I was happy when I saw the news on twitter that FINALLY a female has been allowed to be an official during a game, Irish woman, Joy Neville.

However, the happiness was replaced by annoyance pretty quickly. Why had it taken until 2021 to happen??

At the ripe old age of 35, decided this year that I would go back to school and work on towards a degree. Just finished my first assignment, still getting used to writing academically, etc! Bonus, I can work online since campus is closed and since I'm self motivated, I prefer it this way. There is no right or wrong time to do something new.

The arrival of the six “nations” is a bad point no matter what the year.

Could be worse, could be the start of the ZZzAA championships

Fine. You're right. Hijacking the thread a bit.

I'm excited about graduating from UCD this year. I've worked hard both back when it was in person and online the last few semesters and am looking forward to the culmination of my hard work.

Can then move in to industry and start to make a difference.

Great to see. A fine job she did too, when called upon. Well used to seeing her at this stage so nice to see her rewarded with a “step up”.

What a game. The early kick off wasn’t up to much but the “main event” more than made up for it. Looking forward to tomorrow even more now.

The goys are playing tomorrow

Watched the 1st half hour of that engerland v scotland game....how anyone can excited by it or deem it entertaining is seriously beyond me..

Though hurling will be back this soon, and they have introduced new rules to curb cynical fouling....will hopefully improve it as a contest

Days are getting longer, lambing is around the corner, and return to normality of types is on the horizon

My neighbour got stuck in some mud with her jeepy car and her husband in the passenger seat with his tiny penis. Top tip of the day don’t buy jeepy cars. Buy a penis enlarger if needed.

    What if it’s 4 wheel drive, C?

Not something I’d look forward to, or get “excited” about, but I have seen jeeps stuck in both snow and mud before. There’s really no point in having one that isn’t 4WD.

    January is over.

We are nearly a week into February and it’s bright until after 5.30pm. That’s enough to keep me going! :)

    lambing is around the corner,

aww, the cute lickle lambkins lambolling around the fields, eating all their grass and flowers and herbs...

can't wait for roast leg of lamb in the spring.

Learned to drive/got full driving license/bought a car. Makes serious difference to quality of life even in lockdown. Used some downtime during slow middle period of year in work to earn a project management qualification.

Saved a small fortune and will sit on it for a while I think. Was supposed to be a deposit for a house but the last year has shown me I really quite dislike living in Ireland so I think I might complete a masters in the next year and Fcuk off somewhere else.

I hope the Olympics go ahead.

New businesses rising from the ashes, more local neighbourhood shopping to continue.

The biggest investments in public transport in the history of the state might get planning permission this year, BusConnects, Metro, DART+ And the investment they need.

And lots of personal positives. My Mum is finished chemo and doing well. My youngest is going to be potty trained and is talking more and more after a slow and worrying start. And I will finally lose weight, after too many years having prioritised caring for others I’m going to put me first more.

If I could say one positive think about lockdown it's the dimming of the constant Chinese torture din of vacuous sports news. Especially hearing the surnames, Sexton Sexton Sexton, Klop Klop Klop, Mourinho Mourinho Mourinho every half hour. Ditto for placenames, Leinster Leinster Leinster .
