Same mechanically as the Hyundai i40, like the i40 the original clutches on the 1.7 litre diesels were made of chocolate. My BIL has a 2017 one as a company car since new and it had a new clutch fitted after about 5k km, car has been trouble free since then and there is a fair bit of mileage on it now. They replaced the 1.7 litre diesel with a 1.6 litre in mid 2019 which is supposed to be more fuel efficient.

Friend just bought a 2021 Sportage 1.6 diesel, mild hybrid??, it only appears to have one 68AH battery, I think it just gives assistance when moving off and uses a combined alternator/drive motor to achieve 3% more fuel economy. Any info on this??

Very similar in principle to the Civic IMA from 20 years ago, or any mild hybrid really. It stores energy which it then uses to assist the engine uphill or for acceleration.

My wife has the saloon version (2019), with the 1.6 diesel engine, it's been reliable and very fuel efficient compared to the pair of Sportages she had prior to it.

It's also the size of a small boat and handles like one as well

No, they don’t have a second battery, they have a 48V electrical system and an integrated starter/alternator that’s ran off the crank.

the battery capacity itself is low, only 0.5 of a kWh, so about a 1/3 of what the likes of a Corolla hybrid has. It’s a much simpler system than a true hybrid, but it works.

If we are still talking about the kia Sportage, it has a 12V? 68AH battery where I would expect it to be, where does the 48V come from?

On the mild hybrids there’s apparently a 48v battery in the boot.

Spoke to Kia Service guy, he confirmed that the Kia Sportage mild hybrid has only one battery, in the one I saw, 12V, 68AH.

Yes the Dad has one. I am nearly sure there us a battery got it under the boot. It actually say he proffered the Sportage diesel without it being mild hyprid as tge boot is smaller in the mild hyprid. He was an idiot to buy the old model last year anyway. He could have had the new far superior much better Sportage this year and been much happier. Otherwise once he got used to it it gas been reliable. Its his 3rd Sportage and maybe the last. Its the longest and most cars he has ever had from one car company and he had being buying new since 1997.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.
