Still acting till the end. What a legend. Great in so many films.

He definitely left his mark on the film world.

My favourite role of his was the Shakespeare quoting General Chang in Star Trek VI

    RIP.

One of the great character actors and 91 isn't a bad innings. He had countless roles, but the only one that always pops into my head when I think of him is the RAF SL in 'The Battle of Britain'.

Don't ever let me see you doing a victory roll over my airfield again.

Certainly a legend, oddly he despised his best known Role in the sound of music. Admired him in every role, RIP

Just looking through his IMDB, never seen his earlier films, but recognise him from Dolores Claiborne, 12 Monkeys, and A Beautiful Mind.

Played Sherlock Holmes, a Roman emperor, German kaiser, Klingon, Duke of Wellington... among other roles.

Really liked his narration to recent doco on early Hollywood.. Moguls & Movie Stars: A History of Hollywood.

He'd have been a better Gandalf than McKellen in my opinion.
    He turned the part down.

Sean Con turned it down too.
Always thought Michael Fassbender was a EuroGiant Christopher Plummer

He called it “The Sound of Mucus”, and said that working with Julie Andrews was like “being hit over the head with a big Valentine’s Day card, every day”. :D

I love the film, as my daughter had a ‘phase’ with it - we went on the tour of the filming locations and everything!

He finally won an Oscar a few years ago, for “Beginners”, that was good to see.

Oh I didn't know that. I didn't care for McKellen in LOTR's either but like him in other stuff.

Love hearing these! You give your daughter the trip of a lifetime, one that you'd have loved yourself. But this way, its even more enjoyable.

I too always liked him in films.

This is one of my favourites, I love that movie. It's between Sound and Mary Poppins for my all time. I'd love a tour of the locations!

Last recent movie I saw him in was Knives out, and of course he was his usual wonderful self. There was a movie called Remember a few years ago, and he was in almost every single shot, and just brilliant. Age didn't diminish his talent.
I'm glad he lived a long life and never retired, he'll be remembered as one of the greats.

Salzburg is a lovely place! I never watched the film but the filming locations were pointed out to me!
