.ie sites slow to load behind corporate firewall

    Anyone seeing slow load times on .ie sites the past few days? I am seeing it behind our corporate firewall. Asked a former colleague to check and his new company is affected too. We use a fortigate, he is on a checkpoint.
    The sites are fine on home internet connection or mobile internet.

    If I try debugging on chrome, it shows errors accessing fonts.googleapis.com. All the sites seem to have that in common, they all give timeout errors accessing fonts.googleapis.com.
    GET https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?fam...n+Sans:400,700 net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT

    Example sites affected:
    rte.ie
    thejournal.ie
    boards.ie

    Boards and RTE are fronted by Cloudflare, Journos on AWS. Shouldn't have any shared failure domain unless you're bouncing stateside and back. Talk to your IT dept.

    FWIW RTEs CDN is in bits for months. They didn't scale to meet demand.

    Webfont blocking is just good practice, its a great attack vector.

    Who's your ISP?

    Not noticing any issues via a Sonicwall, ISP is Host Ireland.

    We have Eir and Virgin, tried it over both links and it's the same.
    When I try from our Belfast office, everything loads fine (Vodafone and BT)

    Found the issue-its Eir DNS. Manually set to use Virgin and all ok.

    I never use ISP DNS and OpenDNS / Umbrella is always first choice. 1.1.1.1 / ClouldFlare is very fast but can be quirky but there are many others you can use.

    A useful tool, I'd probably use Google and Cloudflare for high availability.

    Yeah I always get good response times from the Virgin dns servers on dnsBenchmark. Will try Cloudflare too-cheers
