Nurofen purchased today says expiry in 2022

Purchased a box of Nurofen 400mg today in a pharmacy but I may only need half the pack initially (knock on wood).

The expiry date says 06/22 ...whereas a packet of paracetamol I also got is 2024.

Is one year expiry normal for Nurofen or was I sold an old box?

Normal and a perfectly reasonable expiry date

Edit: some products have a manufacturer date but not sure on Nurofen brand. Ask for a generic cheaper version next time.

It’s got 17 months expiry.

What is the problem? Drug efficacy is not diminished until after the expiry date, who cares if it's an "old" box or not. Its still good for another 17 months. :rolleyes:

Likely not disminished after expiry either. That shelf life is just what they tested and guarantee. That’s what they got regulatory approval for.

And perfect if you throw it out in 2022 and buy a new one!

I got a box of 24 but seem to be recovering a lot quicker than I expected so I'm only needing 2 a day.

So I'll probably have 14-15 sitting around for a few years and was hoping I could use the odd one or two at least 2/3 years down the line.

Anyway if one year is the normal expiry that's fine.

To be perfectly honest, it probably had a 3 year or possibly even a 5 year date on the day it left the factory.

But seriously, that doesn't matter. Your pharmacy would (if they hadn't all been sold by then) keep selling those pack until right up to a few weeks before the expiry date. As I pointed out, a 24 pack is 4 days' supply of medication. Or 12 days if you're only taking 2 a day. If you're worried about 17 months expiry on that pack being a rip off, then you really should have bought a 12 pack, shouldn't you?

Yep, anytime ive bought them, id only take 1 or 2 and mightnt go looking for them again for a year or 2.

The US military copped on to getting shafted by the pharmaceutical companies long ago FDA tests let military use expired drugs.

The expiry date on drugs is not the same as the use by date on a piece of chicken.

Going beyond the date with the chicken means you risk poisoning yourself.

Within reason, going beyond the date with drugs likely means the efficacy may have dropped slightly and the chalk might be slightly soggy.

All drugs and other materials should be disposed of responsibly. Your pharmacist will take back any excess medicines.

Where did I say it was a rip off? I was enquiring if one year was a normal expiry date for Nurofen as I would have expected it to be similar to paracetamol.

I bought a 24 pack as I was told I may need it...turns out I'm recovering remarkably fast so I'm going to be left with lots of surplus so I was surprised the remainder was only recommended to last a year.
