Depends totally on the vendor and engineer.

Some vendors don't want potential purchasers in the house except on defined visits.

Also some engineers would prefer to focus on their job and report afterwards rather than having to explain everything in the moment.

Plenty of other vendors and engineers would have no issue with it.

    Just ask!

COVID might make a difference though. I definitely prefer an empty house and nobody near me in the current climate for everyone's safety.

If you want the best out of your engineer leave him/her alone to focus on what they are doing. That doesn't mean you cant go along. Why do you want to go along? If its to discuss things with the engineer then I would say its a bad idea. People asking questions before you have even had the time to think through an issue is counter productive.

    Ask the estate agent.
If they agree, ask your engineer.

If your engineer agrees then sound.

More importantly you need to understand the limitations of what is a visual survey.
so you need to know what to expect.
for me when I do surveys: , as they say in the movies, i work alone

“I can’t pay my staff or mortgage with instagram likes”.
