I'm looking to get a new laptop, I currently have an XPS that I got in 2008 and it's still working fine due to added SSD a few years ago but looking to upgrade.

I'm just wondering if a different model with seemingly better specs is going to perform better, specs below of the two I am looking at, with the XPS on the Dell outlet and the Inspiron on the main website. I have no specific requirements like video editing, etc. just want a good spec laptop that will do me for the next 10 years or so, like my last XPS.

Other than the better screen the XPS looks to be a lower spec.

not sure about this currenet model version which you would want to research but the last 7000 series 15 had very bad thermal design > very bad thermal throttling (always is some but this was excessive)

seems like the issues are still there - if you're not doing heavy gaming it's a good option tho compared to the xps. so if you're not a gamer then ok...

I was having a play with an XPS15 as one was delivered in work yesterday, my first time seeing one. The one that arrived is very similar to your spec except had the i7-10750H CPU & was non-touch. Very nice piece of kit, sadly not for my use :( Haven't ever seen the Inspiron 15 so can't comment on that one.

I'd wait and take a look at the Asus G15, G14 and even A15 2021 models when they become available.
