Passat GTE vs A6 Black Edition?

    Hey lads
Decision to make, and have a matter of hours to make it.

Passat GTE at a reasonable price, but I do serious mileage every day, >180km per day in fact. The alternative is a lovely A6 S-Line Black Edition, the 190bhp step tronic one.

The A6 is obviously about €4k more but I’m wondering would I be better off taking it due to the lack of available charging points, the hassle of charging & the fact that the GTE is a 1.4 petrol which has a serious amount of weight to drag around for all of those Km every day.

Both cars are 172 with very good warranties.

    Any advice appreciated!

I think vw got the engine wrong with the gte.
Bmw are doing it with 2.0 turbo and vw looking for big money too are fitting a 1.4. Thats a step too far imo.

a family friend got the passat gte 2 years ago and ended up returning it within warranty due to "hyrbid system failure" issues. This repeatedly happened withing a couple weeks and he gave up on it and went back to diesel. Also the running costs were about same as his diesel so he saw no economic benefit.

A6 would be the way to go.

A6. I've the same car myself. Will probably work out cheaper in long run. And its nicer car too.

You'll only get 30kms or so out of the electric so fuel costs will be cheaper doing 180kms a day.
If that's 900kms a week it will use around a full 65 litre tank in the A6. That's about 75 euro at today's prices. Bit less maybe if you are on open road a lot.

A 1.4 petrol in a big heavy car with a battery in addition won't match it, even if some is done on electric. Plus it's going to be a lot slower. I'd be adding 20 to 30 euro a week onto fuel costs. There's your 4k back over 3 years. 180kms a day is not typical phev territory. You'll be on electric for 20% or so of driving time. To get the benefits it would want to be 50% or more.

I think you'll get a chunk of the 4k difference back when reselling too.

    I have a GTE Passat 2016.

My long term consumption is 3.5l/100km. On my trip to Killarney and back from Dublin I averaged 6.4l/100km over 500kms. Love the instant torque in GTE mode. I charge at work everyday so it makes perfect sense for me because my 18km commute is done purely on electric.

Small downside to it is that it doesn't have a quick charge capability and is capped at 3.7kW with 10kWh battery. Takes about 2h45m to charge to full from empty. But as I said I charge at work so it doesn't matter. Also you'd need decent enough tires for the front axle as it likes to lose a lot of traction especially in wet. I run imperials EcoSport 2 and so far I am very happy. Not too of the range but decent ones for the price.

If you can charge at home or work, get the GTE. If you can't, get the OOOO. I don't rely on public infrastructure to charge simply because I can charge for free at work and it takes a while but if I had to rely on public chargers it's a no brainer I would get the Audi.

Any questions give me a shout.

A6 is a fantastic car; you will definitely feet good too with a very economical and will be great for a long time. Also with a full tank of fuel, you will cover around 900kms in the A6, also reselling will be fine and you will be in plus with A6 as well. Also, one of the person in our circle got passat gte a few years back and didn’t kept it and returned it before the end of the warranty because of some problem in the hybrid system. So A6 will be better in all the way for sure.
