Painting toilet and utility - any advice

    Hi all,

I have never painted any room before, but am thinking of painting our ensuire toilet (which is partially tiled) and our utility.

It is a new build, built in 2018 - just wondering for any basic tips, such as taping up the skirting, sockets, etc.

I am under no illusions that I should get a professional for the other parts of the house - I plan to get our main rooms done properly, just wanted to have a go at these rooms.

    Any advice most appreciated, thanks

Painting is one of the easier DIY jobs. If you have the time and some good music go for it. Watch some YouTube videos for tips.

    Hi,

I have painted my own place over the years, but I'm by no means particularly skilled.... But like you I see painting as an area I can save a few quid on, the pros will do it better but I can do a half decent job and save some money...

Recently painted the whole house from top to bottom, ceilings, walls, skirting everything etc...

Anyway, my only tips are to get yourself decent equipment, so good paint, good quality brush (you Cs get nice edging brushes), roller etc, and spend a good while prepping, any blemishes or marks in the walls, take your time to sand and fill them etc before starting out. My only regrets, when finished, were one or two rooms where cheap paint was used, broke my heart, and also not having taken enough time to make sure wall surface was perfect beforehand, it's very noticeable afterwards

Ps, I found this guys website very helpful (no idea who he is), I read one of his articles before painting kitchen cabinets and wooden doors throughout the house, so haven't actually read this one at all but based on his other stuff I read, would be surprised if not helpful

For the bathroom - just make sure you get bathroom paint. Then get roll of light covering plastic and some masking tape. Go nuclear.

When rolling don't worry about getting too close, tidy up with a brush after.

    After that roll away.

Invest in good quality masking tape, deltec, frog tape etc, paint shouldn’t bleed through like it does on the cheap masking tapes.

A product called “zinnser perma white”, an absolutely brilliant product for bathrooms, pricey but it will last a long long time in a bathroom.

Many thanks for all the advice above folks - much appreciated.

Think I’ll give it a go!

I would only rely on masking tape for things like the top of skirting boards (if you have them in the bathroom) or around the door frame / window boards. Taking your time and cutting in will give a better finish, you can get special slanted brushes for this task.

Tape takes forever to put on right, and you probably still won't get it right, and if you paint up to the tape you are likely to be surprised when you take it off and find that paint has managed to seep in underneath what you thought was protected and the line is not at all straight.
