Council sprayed material on my car

    Hi guys

Not sure if this is strictly legal, but yesterday there were council roadworks right outside my driveway which I was unaware of as I was in my bedroom all day WFH. In the evening when I came out my white car was absolutely destroyed in brown muddy material, but it had dried in and I’m now finding it extremely difficult to scrub off. When I also went to drive the car it began raining and whatever was sprayed in the WILL NOT come off of my windscreen no matter what I try it’s like an oily greasy substance that the wipers will not wipe.

I think this I is extremely unprofessional behaviour, if they had just knocked in the door and asked I would have moved my car no problem. It’s also not a cheap car by any means. Is there any point in complaining or will I have an easier life by just letting it go?

My father had a similar issue years ago. Council were applying some sort of tar based road treatment and the wind carried drops of it on to his car parked in the front drive way. He contacted the council with details and photos and they said to get it cleaned professionally and send them the bill. No hassle, no pushback, they recognized they were at fault.

So I say contact the council and politely request them to cover any cleaning/etc that needs to be done to resolve the issue. Include details and photos. I'm sure it's not the first time this has happened for them.
