    Hi,

I’m trying to find a clear answer on this, but can’t seem to get a straight/clear answer, I rang RSA today and the girl I spoke to didn’t sound to sure of the answer.

If somebody got there first learner permit in Say 2012, does the August 2014 rule apply to them regarding new penalty point threshold?

Basically in essence, if you have your permit since before 2014 law came in... does the new penalty point threshold apply to you or is it just for new permits on or after August 2014.

A lower threshold of penalty points leading to disqualification will apply to any driver who is granted their first learner permit on or after 1 August 2014 while they drive under a learner permit, and subsequently during the first two years while they drive under their first full driving licence from RSA website.

It seems only if your first permit is after 1/08/14.

Who the hell is still driving around with a learner permit they got back in 2012.

Tbh they don't deserve to be driving. They should do the test it's not even difficult.

I didn’t come on for an opinion on how long they have a permit for or how easy the test is, I already know how easy it is, I sat it. I came on for an opinion on the question that was asked, so if you have nothing to add to that then rock on to the next thread.

That permit would have had to be renewed by now. The renewal date is the issue date of the current permit, not the date of the First permit.

Plenty of people had a Bike Learner Permit prior to 2014. They let it lapse and went down the Car route instead.

Now they have gone back to Biking as a past-time. They would fall under this rule.

From my understanding the Issue date remains the same even after renewal. Example i got my first learner permit 02/14. That permit expired on 02/16. I renewed it on 06/16. My permit issued then still had my orginal issue date at the back( 02/14 ) and new expiry date of 06/18.

When i got my full license the issue date was reset obviously.

So my understanding from the above is that if your first learner permit was issued before 08/14. You are under the old system and need 12 points to be disqualified. Thats my understanding of it, correct me if I'm wrong.

People driving around on there 4th and 5th learner permit is a joke but thats a rant for a different thread.
