    Hey

As the title says, Is there any advantage to a 35 year old starting the Green cert or has all the young farmer benefits been missed at this stage assuming that one completes the Green cert at 36?

    Thanks

Young farmer scheme is for under 40 so it is still a benefit if you are going to taking control of the farm/drawing entitlements in your own name before then.

Chap that works for me did it two years ago in his mid 50’s, said he definitely learned stuff.

When is the young farmer scheme likely to open again?

Is it worth applying for the young farmers scheme now for the first time, or if age allowed, would you be better off waiting to see what the new CAP brought along?

If you do the green cert after 40 would you get the 60% grant on whatever schemes (TAMS etc.) or do you have to have completed the cert before 40. If it was the case it could be some benefit as you would be getting 60% instead of 40%

Can you apply to a young farmers scheme at the moment?

You need to be under 40 to get 60% grant

It qualifies you for the education requirement for agri relief for CAT if you want to work it yourself.

You can still obtain the relief by setting it out to someone for the 6 years so it's not 100% necessary (assuming other conditions satisfied .... Or you can also try to get business relief)

Which one are you thinking of doing though? Online one can drag out I think but it wouldn't really impact on day-to-day life.

Off topic but any options for green cert?

I had planned to do the online green cert with Westport CFE but apparantly it was booked out in 6 minutes and they overbooked so now they're even booked out for the green cert starting in September 2022.

Going by the website, it says the course is taught over 2021 and 2022 with certification in 2023. That means next years course would be certified in 2024 and the one I'd potentially be able sign up for would be 2025....

I liked that one because it was mostly online with just a few saturdays involved.

I can't afford to attend during the week and I liked that the one in Westport only cost 2k.

    Any other options?

Farm Ed are doing a green Cert programme based in cahir. I just finished it there before xmas. It was to be completed in 8 months but due to covid we got held up for a bit.

I would need the online evening course unfortunately as I have a full time job in office.

Sorry forgot to say it was done on Saturdays and went online during the covid lockdowns. Be no harm to contact them anyway to see, they could be planning on doing an online version. There was huge interest in it.

On the course at the moment. My advice is ring around. I got lucky and found a open slot in September 2020 for a December start. All online due to covid (normally in person) except for 10 in person skills days where we dehorn etc.

Course is 18 months in total. Our course is in East Cork but people are travelling from as far as around Limerick city since they couldn't get into any other course

Sorry to piggy back off your thread but it's kinda a related topic.

The national reserve, can someone explain it to me. My father is farming at the moment around 52 Ha but once I'm finished the cert we'll probably go into partnership. I'm trying to understand what I'm eligible for. We'll speak with advisors etc closer to the time but I'm trying to understand where I stand.

My understanding so far is it's a bump in the value of my entitlements based in the national average value for 5 years? Does that mean I'd get a increased CAP pay out for 5 year and is it a top up on top of what my father has or how does it work?
