No, the car has to have valid tax to be used on public roads.

I believe if it's declared off the road, you can drive it to and from an NCT center, but if it's just untaxed, then no you cant.

    Nope.....

Motor tax isn't required once the vehicle has been signed off the road...
If it's in arrears then the car will be lifted if caught usually from 2 months on.....

The vehicle must have a valid NCT at all times even if booked for a test one can't legally drive without test.

    Thanks for the replies.

Car has insurance but out of tax (September, but not declared off road) and test for a few months (October including extension). But not used on the road since. Was going to test it and sell it, but sounds like the least hassle would be to just sell it without test. It's a 05 Corolla with 175k miles, so probably not worth much without a test?

If it's untaxed due to having been declared "off the road" then YES, driving to and from NCT is permissible

Thanks all. So what's it worth without a test?

I bought a 03 Corolla with 150k miles 3 years ago that had a fresh 12 month test for €600. So it was 15 years old when I bought it. Shes still going strong.

A 05 now with 175k miles and no NCT. Stick her up for 500 quid and hope for the best.

I remember there used to be a law allowing to drive vehicle without NCT on a day it failed its test (obviously assuiming it wasn't fail dangerous).
    Was this law changed since?

It's quite silly but you could not drive vehicle without NCT to the test centre (i.e had to have it towed on a truck), but if it failed the test, then you could legally drive without NCT for the rest of the day.

We pay tax on our motors that are parked up most of the time - therefore subsidising other motorists.
