When I was young a very long time ago now, no one ever went on a date, dating was American.

Young teen it was the disco the DJ has a record player and it was 50p in there might have been a bit of action outside but no one went on dates to meet someone.

older it was the pub and you just seem to merge with someone not sure how it happened exactly, there might have been an occasional meet you outside the cinema but that was the extent of it.

So when did all the going on dates start in Ireland

It all began with the demise of d'shift.

If you're after a genuine answer, largely the 1950's and 60's when the general practice of matchmaking came to an end.
Back then of course it wasn't called dating, but courtin'.

I suppose when people started using the dating sites that the term started being used over here. Before it was just an American concept. You'd have some American TV show where there's some careerist young wan trying to fit in as many dates as she can after work.
Sex and the city kind of stuff and that was the only time you'd hear about dates unless someone bought a packet of them from Quinnsworth
