My laptop is on the right. His is on the left. HOW can there be such a difference in speeds? I nearly fired the thing out the window this morning. I've updated ESET Antivirus and it's still the same. (Actually this morning it was much worse)

Are both laptops using WiFI or Ethernet?

    Both using wifi

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 609 ✭✭✭jumbone

    Both using wifi

WiFi a/b/g all top out at 54mbps WiFi n supports up to 600mbps.

46 Mbps Internet speed on a 54 Mbps network link is dead on.

What network adapters are in each laptop?

    Both using wifi

5ghz or 2.4ghz? Your wireless router will have 2 radios. 5ghz gives faster speeds but 2.4ghz will give greater distances. My guess it the one on the right doesn't support 5ghz and falls back to the slower 2ghz.

If you actually need the speed you could disable your internal WiFi card and use one of these:
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B083WNZGYF/

Bearing in mind that you may be then be constrained by your USB bandwidth - USB 2.0 tops out at 480Mbps (and real world will be lower)

USB 3 supports 5 Gbps so won't have that limitation.

Easy way to identify USB 3 ports is that the plastic inside them is blue - your laptop may not have one Or may only have some fast ports if it is of the age that doesn't support 5ghz wifi

Holidays w do I find out?

Not near a pc to get exact steps, but but from https://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000500.htm :

In Windows 10, type system info in the search bar on the taskbar and select the System Information option in the search results.
In the System Information window, click the + symbol next to Components in the left navigation area.
Click the + next to Network and highlight Adapter. The right side of the window should display complete information about the network card.

It appear that you do only have a 2.4ghz WiFi card:

^ on that link they are discussing changing the WiFi card inside the laptop. The USB option I mentioned above would be an easier option but obviously you then have to give up a USB port for the dongle..

The card they mention is pretty cheap though

I don't mind giving up a USB port. I'd buy that thingy if I knew it would work - can I trust your advice! :D

Before you buy, what is it that you are struggling to do on the laptop with the speeds your are getting? Web pages won't open any quicker. You may not notice a any difference depending on what your are doing

Edit disregard, didn't click into the images
