Twitter and Facebook - Voluntary Organisations and Advertising

    I am a board member of a community radio station which operates largely on a pro bono and voluntary basis.


    We have both Twitter and FB accounts.


    The Twitter account attracts little traffic, the FB account more so.


    We are interested in improving site traffic, in addition to looking at offering advertising on our Twitter and FB feeds in return for pro bono work from contributors such as graphic designers, legal work, accountancy, etc.


    Our current income stream is restricted to radio broadcast advertising as well as sponsorship and local authority grants - both of the latter tend to be ear-marked for specific projects.


    Can organisations with a solid social media presence offer this kind of advertising to potential donors.


    Are there other ways of paying in-kind for such work?


    More commercially, can money be made from a healthy social media profile by organisations such as local radio stations?


    Are there alternatives to Twitter and FB we should be looking at?

    If I've read it right, you want to offer advertising to service providers in lieu of payment? But advertising on your social accounts not on the radio station itself?

    I seriously doubt you'll get much take up.

    If you want them to work for free or donate their time then ask them for that but if you require (and expect) a professional service then you should expect to pay accordingly.

    Additions to FB and Twitter -
    Instagram, Youtube, and the current hot favourite, TikTok.

    You're about 3 years too late.

    Back in 2018/2019 Facebook clamped down on businesses advertising themselves to their followers for free. They created an algorithm update and now the organic reach on FB is 5% at best.

    This means that if you have 1000 followers, your non-paid (organic) posts will reach around 50 of them (on a good day).

    Most Social Media channels are pay-to-play these days, unfortunately.

    Yes there can. Thats exactly what social media influencers do for a living. They use their popular social media accounts to endorse third party products in exchange for money

    Fair point FionMc.

    Thing is though influencers usually get much better engagement rates than businesses. Which means that their content is more likely to get viewed.

    Even influencers need to rack up serious numbers in non-niche categories to monetize properly though IMO.
