I took advantage of free amazon prime for one month so free deliveries.

    So awesome.

It's so easy to press the "1 click purchase" button.

It's not reckless spending, per se, just items I've needed for a while but been putting off getting - things I'd normally shop locally for but with prime, everything is super cheap and delivered to my door, vs dragging muh feet about primark looking for bargains.

Aliexpress also - I'm a sucker for this site.

Most items are about 1/3rd (or less) the cost of western sites.

    .....

How cool is it in the age of technology where we can basically e-shop, effortlessly?

And select perfect items, exactly what's required with no compromises like you'd have to typically do looking for specialist merchandise in a department store etc.

It's no surprise to me Jeff Bezos was the richest man on the planet (up until last week at least, when Elon Musk was declared to have claimed that title).

I mean, Bezos comes off like a bit of a tool, but DAYUM I love amazon (prime).

Well it is with all the shops closed!

Said it before: if Covid had happened pre-internet, we'd have been REALLY ****ed.

I spend far too long window shopping online, it's actually pretty crazy.

General rule I try to have these days is not to buy things instantly but just put it in a shopping basket and check back later to see if I still want it.

Otherwise I'm just constantly browsing and buying absolutely mad **** on eBay

E-bay is okay for some things, but overall I find it much inferior to aliexpress and/or amazon, depending on the item.

Even for sports/fitness items, Elvery's online or Argos are now mostly doing free deliveries or perhaps a nominal 5 euro with Argos depending on the item; so awesome.

Occasionally there's items I can't find anywhere else that I'll get off e-bay but for the majority of things, it's probably my least used site (though still awesome to have it).

    .....

Hell I mean, I even bought a set of curtains off Amazon a couple days back.

Just took the measurements required, found their stunt double on Amazon and BOOM!! No having to deal with the skanks in Primark to meet my interior decoration requirements.

    Love it.

Living in DK where shopping local costs an arm & a leg, myself and the hubby have always been suckers for amazon and ali express, aswell as online clothing sites, ikea etc. But even moreso since the pandemic started! I shudder to think how much we spend!
The only disadvantage is the sheer amount of packaging we accumulate from it. We have to make regular trips to the dump with boxes, bit of a pain..

You can literally get anything you need on ebay too - speaking of windows, I bought a new blackout window blind for a velux window off a lad in Germany last month :pac:

I've been using it to buy everything for almost 20 years now. Would only use amazon if they had some specific deal on, but rarely go near it. Nice to know I'm not making Bezos even richer :D

I find AliExpress great! Make sure whatever you are buying has plenty reviews though to be sure you get a decent item! Ive 5 orders on the way atm.

I ordered brake levers recently took longer than usual, package arrived and it inside was a pack of socks, i have no idea how that happened the sellers shop doesn't even sell socks but to be fair i got a full refund and to keep the socks.

    FREE SOCKS!

When you have kids ebay is a life saver.. youngest is mad into Gremlins, Jaws, Indiana Jones, he’s basically an 8 year old that timetravelled to me from 1982...
eBay is where all his dreams are fulfilled! Can’t get that type of stuff anywhere else without paying an arm and a leg for it. Currently on the hunt for Neca Mogwai, and killer klowns....the joys!

Whilst I don't use it for spending sprees like amazon etc. Alibaba itself is also awesome.

Depending on the supplier, most like to ship in bulk but, contacting their sales person sometimes they'll ship trial amounts for individuals.

    ....

Other online retail like Ikea I'm sure is good but the delivery cost makes it inefficient unless there a significant enough purchase.

I was really surprised to see Elvery's do free delivery, which is awesome.

    Online clothes stores?

    Never used 'em.

    Any suggestions?

I love a bargain so I just throw stuff in the basket on Amazon but also set the Keepa extension to send me an email alert for when the price drops. Theres a great buzz getting something for 70 quid when it is usually priced at 100. You just got to be patient but almost everything on Amazon drops in price every 3 months or so.

I think it is pot luck but from the Aliexpress thread a lot of stuff gets through. If its a bulky package its probably more likely to get stopped for inspection.

Theres no customs charges on items under 22 euro anyway which would be a lot of stuff people buy from that site. Sadly from July this year they will be charging VAT on items under 22 so the golden age of shopping from China is going to come to an abrupt end.

It really depends on what it is and what price it costs, i bought a doogie titans 2 for €88. The seller declared 30 dollars but revenue email me for proof of this but it cost €88 so i sent them that and the charged me some small fee can't recall how much to be honest but it was still a bargain local phone shop was selling them for €250 a pop and had sold at least 10 of them at that price!!

Most of my orders are under €30 and haven't got a import fee on any of those only the phone, i think revenue has a guide on the website for how much value an item has to have to be charged for importing it.

    .....

    That sucks.
    If your goods have:

a customs value (including cost, transport, insurance and handling charges) of €22 or less you will not have to pay Customs Duty or VAT
a customs value of more than €22 you will have to pay VAT
an intrinsic value (the value of the goods alone excluding transport, insurance and handling charges) of more than €150 you will have to pay Customs Duty.
These limits are for the whole delivery, not just one item. You must pay the above duties where applicable, and VAT on alcohol or tobacco products, perfumes or toilet waters, regardless of their value.

    Note

From 1 July 2021 import VAT will:

be payable on all goods entering the EU, irrespective of their value
    and
always be collected, irrespective of the amount due
    .
    https://www.revenue.ie/en/importing-vehicles-duty-free-allowances/buying-of-goods-online-for-personal-use/buying-goods-from-outside-the-eu.aspx

As of right now they let anything under 22 euro value slide. But from the 1st of July even something costing 10 euro from Aliexpress will attract a VAT charge of 2.10 and Revenue will be collecting it. Also expect an admin fee from An Post or whatever courier is delivering it. It could make that 10 quid bargain become 20 euro by the time it arrives at your front door. .

Id expect Aliexpress will establish more EU based warehouses which will prevent the courier admin fee but the long and short of it is Revenue are going to be collecting 21% VAT on even small purchases like USB cords, mobile phone covers, etc.

The whole purpose of aliexpress was to reduce cost on small item purchase via post subsidy (which formerly was impossible due to cost of shipping from china, would defeat the purpose of buying a low cost item), to support small Chinese businesses.

Pascal Donohue needs to catch some hate mail for this.

    I

How cool is it in the age of technology where we can basically e-shop, effortlessly?

    .

I can't possibly think of anything I would possibly want to buy right now online, aside from perhaps a firestick and a fitbit. And, frankly, I'll wait til places re open to buy them or buy them on click and collect. I've found too many soaking wet parcels over my sidegate that are for the neighbours to trust delivery services.

I've bought clothes maybe three times online. And one of those was only because a jacket I really fancied in the fancy section upstairs in Sports Direct wasn't in my size so I bought it online.

    Primarily because

a- you can't tell you'll truly like something without trying them on

b- coats, jeans, trackie pants, impossible to know if you like the feel of them without touching/ trying on

c- most importantly. Brand name clothing online is virtually always either of equal price or, far more commonly, more expensive than in bricks and mortar. The prices of brand name clothes on the likes of ASOS are absolutely astronomical compared to in your local shopping centre for the same stuff.

After the first lockdown lifted in May, JD Sports, Lifestyle, BT, Arnotts, they were all but giving away clothes to make way for summer lines. More fool anybody who bought a shedload during the lockdown at premium prices.

People make me laugh. Moaning and whingeing about prices in shops.. the same shops whose rates pay for street lights etc etc and probably the HAP that some of you receive. Tge same shops that employ local people who pay taxes which keep the show on the road. What'll ye do when there are no shops left, and no taxes to fund society, as all the money is gone to Bezos and a handful of others, who are increasingly pushing AI and automation?

Dont think your jobs arent at risk. Society is symbiotic, and what affects one part will eventually affect all

The main laugh is how so many people have been duped into thinking they are making savings.

MandMDirect are quite cheap I'll give you that, but they primarily stock clothing brands of yesteryear that the bricks and mortar don't regularly stock any more (Umbro, Reebok).

The difference between ASOS and JD Sport are like the difference between a happy meal and Eddie Rockets. Same gear, 30 euro plus more expensive.

One of my favorite sites is 80s Casual Classics, but I've never actually bought anything off them. I have bits from it that they stock for 60- 80 that I picked up in Champion Sport for 20.

What are people supposed to do? When your 11 year old needs a 70" tv in their bedroom it's not really practical to wait until lockdown is over?

This dependency on massive online retailers is on the government for not even allowing local shops to have click and collect in place.
