Second hand cars more expensive these days

Is it just me or are second hand cars more expensive these days even comparing to 2 or 3 years ago?

I remember not long ago if you were looking at 12 or 13 year old cars you'd get a good one for around €1,500.

I'm seeing some dealers and garages selling 2008 cars for €4,000 to €6,000. Surely they aren't getting that?

Can't say I've any hard data to back that up, but it would stand to reason alright.

In 2018 say, a 10-12yo car was on the (mostly) higher CC based tax band.

The reg comes into it too, any car registered up to 31st Dec 2009 had a reg starting with a 0X rather than a 1X.

I would expect that in 2019, a 10yo car with a -09 reg is worth less than a -10 car would be in 2020.

New cars have gone up so there is a trickle down effect.

    It seems that way alright.

I'm on the look out for a 2013-2016 diesel estate and some of the prices are incredible.
I will admit I am only looking at high end E-Class / S line Germans but still...

    15k + looks the minimum...

I have noticed this too.big mileage and rough condition and still asking strong money.
Maybe it's just me but there seems to be limited used stock around.

A lot of 2008 cars are on the newer Co2 tax system so you will still pay a bit of a premium over one on the older engine size based system. Another factor is Covid, some people with fairly new cars bought on finance either lost their jobs due to the pandemic or simply cannot justify them sitting unused on their driveway so are handing them back and buying cheaper runabouts, so demand influences prices.

With newer stuff prices are starting to climb because of Brexit and VRT changes, it's not as attractive to import a used car from the UK now so people will have to buy stuff already in the country, again supply and demand influences prices.

I don't think they're actually selling for that, at least not in the past 6 months. My 13 E-Class estate was the cheapest of it's year on carzone albeit highish mileage and it took me a while to sell. Private seller didn't help of course, but some were up for over €20k which is total dreamer money. I sold for a lot less than that, and still lost feck all on depreciation.

During the time it was for sale, I saw lots of others which didn't sell for months.

Absolutely agree. I bought a 6 year old Saab 9-5 with 150k on the clock in 2012 for 6 grand. Granted it was on the expensive tax system but the equivalent Volvo today would be twice that, easily.

Also, when I first started driving 20 years ago, 10 year old mid size saloons like mondeos, Carinas, vectras etc in good condition were 1000-1500 tops. That remained the case until about 6/7 years ago when 10 year old equivalents of the day started to creep up to 2000-2500. These days people think nothing of spending 4-6k on a 10 year old premium brand car. It would've seemed crazy 20 years ago.

+1, I bought a 7 year old Volvo S60 petrol in 2014 for 3k cash in a private sale, great condition and it's been rock solid ever since. Granted the €710 yearly tax bill is tough but there's nothing remotely like it in terms of value going now.
Was half thinking of changing it this year but no decent 5-8 year old petrol cars on the market.

Another factor consigning many to the bin is insurance. Getting difficult for cars at 10, and nigh-on impossible at 15.

So, someone buying an 8yr old car better get ready to get married to it.

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Certainly noticed asking prices are way higher. Usually for some pittance in motor tax savings. Unless you have to change car or have money to burn better of sticking with what you have or auctions might be worth trying if importing from uk is out or no longer financially worthwhile...
