    Hi All,

Which diesel SUV is best to buy in terms of Mpg, maintenance costs, reliability etc for a lady comuting 2 hours daily:

    1. Toyota Rav4
    2. Hyundai Tuscon
    3. Suzuki Vitara
    4. Mitsubishi Asx
    5. Kia Sportage

    Budget is €12,000-€15,000.

    All opinions welcome.

    Yes possibly.

Presume that is meant to be Kia Sportage? That would be my preferred one anyway.

    Kuga?

The Sportage is the best car there as she will get better equipment on the Sportage than any of the others. It is average go drive nothing special but they are good on potholes roads and bumps at absorbing them. They have a good ride
The ASX is the worst car there.

We got Rav4 which is highly reliable & comfortable as a family car. Keep an eye out for higher spec ones (sol) with leather seats and electric tailgate. Perhaps a bit on thirsty at 6.5l/100km for 2 hours commute.

What are the 1.6 diesel Vitaras like?

We just went through the same decision making process and have gone with Sportage. I'm 6' 2" and with growing kids need to be able to fit them in! Plenty of room in Sportage for me to sit behind myself!
Thought Rav4 was too expensive and thirsty in comparison to the others, Tucsons were coming in more expensive than equivalent Sportage, we didn't like the internals (or space) of the Qashqai. ASX seemed small so ruled it out early on.

The Vitara looks to be good value for money though we couldn't find any nearby to view so can't comment on space or dynamics. Definitely would have been an option.

The Vitara is even smaller than the Qashqai

Neighbour has one there, regularly hauls 4 round bales with a 14ft ifor trailer.

Out of your list I would go for the Toyota, but I'd get a honda crv.

I have a 161 Sportage which I really like. Seems economical enough, I drive a lot! Has good spec and plenty of space.Husband drives Kuga, it's more comfortable and luxurious to travel in but doesn't have some basic spec such as reversing camera.

VW tiguan and Volvo xc60 worth a look too.

Would be old model Tiguan in that budget, which feels quite dated inside (think Mk2 Skoda Superb)
Still a good car, you’d be in dieselgate territory too.

VW TIGUAN is so far ahead of any of those listed

God, I test drove a Tiguan before and really didn’t like it, it was fresh and low mileage ... handled like dirt... sluggish also, low power. I think a previous poster is right, I’d be considering something like the crv, or maybe the xc60

You may not be used to driving a good car

With reliability a priority, it should be a list of those 2.

Agreed, had a 2017 SEL Tiguan and got rid of it after a month. Power delivery was way too slow at cruising speed and worst of all the handling was very poor. Heavy and not very comfortable.

My current cars a bmw 520, suppose that’s ****e now that I disagreed with u about a Tiguan! Haha

I’ve been holding out to try get a nice 3 litre but not seeing anything so have looked at smaller suvs, and of the suvs we drove, the crv and xc60 were great, as was the rav but I don’t like the stop start on that...

If don’t see a reasonable deal in a 3 litre in the coming months it will be down to the best deal I can get on either the crv or xc60. Wife much preferred the crv so that might affect the outcome too!

So u see why I’d have no time for something that handles like a wheelbarrow then ;)

Anyways op, go try em all and see what ya think .a q5 is another one to consider too. (I love it’s faster sq5 twin, great drive and power... would love to buy but overpriced )

I have a 161 Tuscon (petrol), previous to that i had an 11 Quasqui (diesel). I have also had a Rav 4 as a rental.

Tuscon would be my preference of all of them, certainly for comfort and boot size. The Quasqui was very reliable but i found the boot small, the Rav 4 was great to drive but passangers found the back seat uncomfortable and the boot was also small.

I'm not mad about them, but I have heard (not sure how much truth there is to this) that they get very seriously targetted by thieves? Apparently?

Would there be enough power in a 1.7 sportage or IX35 for towing a 10x5 cattle trailer?

What are the Renault kadjar like? Noticed a lot more of them around my area recently

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,823 ✭✭✭✭galwaytt

Kadjar & Qashqai are the same car.

Personally I prefer the finishes in the Renault, but other than that there's nothing between them tbh.

Heading for three years later and a 2014 q5 with reasonable mileage etc would be very difficult to find on that budget

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 550 ✭✭✭zinzan

Bit of a zombie thread but interesting to reread - nearly three years later the Sportage I mentioned that we bought is basically still worth what we paid for it.. didn’t see that coming! Situation isn’t going to change much either over the next 6 years as we head towards the ICE ban…

Thing is that all cars have increased in price new and used so if you were to trade it tomorrow it would still be costing you more to trade up to another car now than it did 3 years ago irrespective of your current car's value not changing much.

What would people recommend the best SUV to buy? Kia, Hyundai, Toyota, Ford, Honda?
